ACTOR and singer Ian Stewart is bringing an extra touch of star quality to his performance as strolling player Jack Point in Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s new production of classic operetta The Yeomen of the Guard.

For if you look carefully as Ian’s jester’s stick, you might spot the similarity with a famous face from the golden age of television.

Retired university administrator Ian, who lives in Renishaw, has played ill-fated comedian Jack five times over the years and always brings his own jester’s stick with him.

And he admits that the distinctive face is based on Parker, the celebrated Cockney chauffeur in cult 1960s TV puppet show Thunderbirds.

Ian is also a member of the British Puppet and Model Theatre Guild and is a regular puppet maker and demonstrator.

“When you’re playing Jack Point you do have to have a jester’s stick and so I decided I would make my own when I first played the part,” he explained.

“I thought it would be fun to base it on a favourite comedy character and because I had been making a version of Parker I realised I had a mould of his face that I could use.

“It’s a really distinctive face that stands out well and I’m very pleased to have been able to use him every time I’ve played the part.”

Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s production of The Yeomen of the Guard runs at the Merlin Theatre, Meadowbank Road, Nether Edge, from April 10 to 13. For tickets call 0114 2363797 or visit doregass.weebly.com/tickets.html
