DORE Gilbert and Sullivan Society is on the move to a new stage as the curtain rises on the theatre company’s forthcoming production.

The group which specialises in the work of Britain’s most enduring operetta composers, WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, will present their revival of classic musical drama The Yeomen of the Guard from April 10 to 13.

But after many years performing at venues like the University Drama Studio and the Montgomery Theatre, this year’s show will be staged for the first time at the Merlin Theatre in Nether Edge.

Dating back to 1969, the Merlin is a community theatre set in the scenic grounds of Tintagel House at Meadowbank Road..

Widely considered to be one of the most beautiful little theatres in the country, the Merlin has recently had a major renovation to restore it back to its former glory, completely refitted with luxury seating and state of the art LED lighting.

The Merlin is managed and run by Freeman College and Brantwood Specialist School, two national centres of educational excellence for children and young people with autism and a range of behavioural, emotional and mental challenges.

“We are delighted to be making our debut at the Merlin, which is a wonderful gem of a theatre and perfectly suited to the needs of a group like ours,” said Dore secretary Gill Rugg.

“The auditorium is the perfect size and following its restoration looks better than ever.

“It’s very easy to get to and we shall even have marshalled disabled parking available.

“There’s plenty of space for parking around the venue and buses 3 and 3A come out regularly from High Street in the city centre.

“We hope our audience for The Yeomen of the Guard will be excited by the Merlin as we are.”
