SCIENCE, sex and landscape gardening…Endellion Theatre Company presents a new production of Tom Stoppard’s West End and Broadway hit Arcadia.
Hailed as a serious comedy about the past and present, order and disorder, certainty and uncertainty, Arcadia is a drama that spans two different worlds and two very different centuries.
In the year 1809 lust, longing and literary rivalry take hold of Sidley Park, a grand house in Derbyshire, where proposals for the remodelling of the landscape are being contemplated.
And in the midst of this emotional storm, teenage girl Thomasina Coverly is making a scientific discovery that could change the way people understand the world.
Flash forward to the present and rivalry once again seizes the inhabitants of Sidley Park as academics Bernard and Hannah compete to unpick the historic secrets of the estate and its earlier occupants.
Who was Sidley’s mysterious hermit? Do the scrawlings in a young lady’s notebook really show her to be a scientific genius? And what – if anything – was Lord Byron up to?
This ambitious new production of the Tom Stoppard classic is presented by Endellion Theatre Company at Theatre Impromptu - St Saviour’s Church, Thurlstone, near Penistone - from November 21 to 24.
Director Jonathan Walker-Kane’s previous credits include Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar at Sheffield’s Lyceum, A Man For All Seasons at Sheffield Cathedral, Aspects of Love at West Yorkshire Playhouse and The Boyfriend, South Pacific, Follies, A Little Night Music, Shirley Valentine, The King and I and Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads at Buxton Opera House .
He most recently directed an acclaimed revival of musical classic Oliver at the Church of St Giles in the Field in London’s West End as well as productions of Taken at Midnight at Penistone Parish Church, Man of La Mancha at the famous Leeds City Varieties and Evita at Theatre Impromptu.
“The unique demands of a venue like Thurlstone Parish Church, which is being specially adapted into Theatre Impromptu to accommodate this new production of Arcadia, mean this will be an entirely fresh take on one of the finest and funniest comedies of recent years,”Jonathan said.
“With a show of this scale and ambition we have once again cast some of the best known and most familiar names across the region as we need to have the best company possible.”
Arcadia features a cast of well known regional amateur actors and Endellion regulars including Matthew Walker, Paul North, Virginia Meir, Peter Frost and Fraser Wilkinson.
Lighting is by Simon Lord, choreography by Elaine Wormald and the music is by Michael Roth, who composed the music for the first New York production in 1995.
