A group of teens at a Shiregreen school who tasted success as new business owners have been recognised at a special event.

Pupils from Firth Park Academy have been taking part in the £40 Challenge, funded by Sanctuary Housing and delivered by arts charity Ignite Imaginations, which has seen three groups compete to make the most profit from a £40 investment.

Over the last six weeks, each team has taken part in sessions run by Ignite Imaginations to develop their idea into a product or service which was taken to market.

The winning Year 10 students who made the most from their initial £40 used their idea of a bake sale to turn a profit. They received commemorative certificates and prizes of cinema vouchers at an award ceremony.

Further prizes were also given for the most innovative business and best team work, which went to a group selling snacks, sports drinks and Chocolade, a hot chocolate drink with marshmallows that was packaged up as one unit.

It is hoped that the project has helped to teach the young people important skills that are essential for any future entrepreneurs such as organisation, teamwork and thinking creatively.

Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, Melanie King, said: “The £40 Challenge has been a big success. The teens have got so much out of the project and have also had the opportunity to build up important life skills such as successful budgeting and time management.

“I’m looking forward to running the £40 Challenge for more young people in Shiregreen to take part in.”

This project is funded by Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
