A look at stories surrounding those whose voices have helped how Sheffield has been part of the struggle for the equality, freedom and justice for people facing discrimination due to colour and a sense of being ‘outsiders’.

A look at stories surrounding those whose voices have helped how Sheffield has been part of the struggle for the equality, freedom and justice for people facing discrimination due to colour and a sense of being ‘outsiders’.

The talk will consider the impact of visitors to our city from the 1790s onward, including the many fugitive slaves from America, to more recent figures such as concert artist and actor Paul Robeson. It will look at others such as hymm writer and poet James Montgomery and abolitionist Mary Ann Rawson whose long tenure in the city had a profound impact on Sheffield’s political landscape.

We will consider some of the outsiders whose arrival lead to a response from Sheffielders, including the arrival of New Commonwealth citizens in the post-Windrush years and beyond to the 21st century.
